Back in Lima after three day bus ride. Last five days in Pucallpa I was waiting to leave, but trapped by rain and impossible roads and the plane booked solid. The Naval Lieutenant did a hideous strip tease with his character armor. Everybody yelling, ’For God’s sake keep it on.’ He began goosing the waiter and when I passed his room in the morning he would rush to the door and show me a hard on and say, ’Hello Bill’.
This place gives me the stasis horrors. The feel of location of being just where I am and nowhere else is unendurable. Suppose I should have to live here?
Did you ever read H. G. Wells’ The Country of the Blind? About a man stuck in a country where all the other inhabitants had been blind so many generations they had lost the concept of sight. He flips.
’But don’t you understand I can see?’
